Ground To Sand is a projectile modifier type spell that adds a transmutation effect to projectiles. This effect causes any solid materials in a moderate radius of the projectile to be replaced with sand, and lasts as long as the lifetime of the projectile.

Despite the spell's description, some 'soft' materials such as packed snow will still be transmuted. Combining this modifier with a mechanism to remove sand (and other powder materials) produces one of the best digging methods available in the game.

Affected Materials

  • Transmutes Cursed Rock (the sand produced provides some protection against the direct contact damage of that material).
  • Converting the brickwork material of Holy Mountains into sand can make the gods angry.
  • Bomb-type projectiles with physics bodies (e.g. Explosive Boxes) do not enjoy being turned into sand, and will express this by exploding.

Tips

  • Found as an Always-Cast on a wand, or with the Unlimited Spells perk, the world will melt before you.
  • Best used with slow-moving, ground-penetrating projectiles to prolong the effect - e.g. Glowing Lance.
  • The modifiers Increase Duration and Linear Arc or Horizontal Path, combined with the Dissolve Powders perk and a slow-moving projectile, allow you to simply walk behind the projectile as it flies, clearing through the sand it leaves behind.
  • Strong synergy with Chaotic Transmutation - this combination can transform most materials, though due to the random (and often hazardous) nature of the end result this is better for creating materials than it is for digging.

Unlimited Use

The usage limit of modifier spells can be bypassed in several ways.

  • The Unlimited Spells perk removes the usage limit for most spells, including this one.
  • Ground to Sand, like other projectile modifiers, will only consume a charge if a spell of type Projectile, Static Projectile, or Material was cast alongside it. Through creative means this can be exploited to use the modifier effect without consuming charges.
  • Mu will copy all projectile modifiers on your wand, and ignores charges remaining.
  • Alpha, Gamma, Tau and Omega can all copy spells with no charges remaining.
  • Add Trigger will copy the effect of a limited charge modifier without consuming charges.
