Zeta
Zeta is a spell that copies a spell from another wand in your inventory. It has the lowest mana drain of all the Greek Letter spells.
Tips
- Given that the effect it picks can be practically anything else you're carrying in your other wands, this spell can be hard to control.
- Like all the other Greek Letter spells, it can copy spells that are normally limited by charges, and is the cheapest way to do so if you can somehow cope with its randomness.
- If a wand held in another inventory slot contains an always cast spell, Zeta may choose that spell from the wand's spell pool instead. Keep this in mind when using Zeta while holding wands with dangerous always casts.
- Similar to a modifier, Zeta always draws one spell after evaluating (See Expert Guide: Draw).
- In other words: on a non-shuffle wand, the spell after Zeta will be cast at the same time, regardless of what Zeta copies.
- Zeta's chosen spell is dependent on the player position and the specific time it's cast at; this means if several Zetas are cast in the same shot, all will target the same spell.
- Because Zeta is the only Greek letter spell that can be found starting in the Coal Pits, it can be a viable solution to unlimited spells in a pinch.
Using Zeta
While highly situational, Zeta can be a very valuable spell, especially in the early game. Zeta selects a random spell on a random wand to copy, making it generally unpredictable. If the user has no other options, though, Zeta can be a viable path to unlimited spells. This is especially helpful as Zeta is the only Greek letter spell that can appear in Tier 2; all the others you must explore further before they appear, whereas you can find Zeta as early as the the spell shops in the Coal Pits or the Holy Mountain in the Snowy Depths.
The trick with using Zeta is to only have two wands on hand: one to cast Zeta, and the other that holds the spells you want Zeta to cast, such as Black Hole. This wand can have all the spells you would like to be able to cast, for instance Black Hole and Circle of Vigour. Then, simply toss your other wands aside for a moment and cast Zeta until you get the spell you want. This is a cheap and easy path to early unlimited black holes, with the downside of needing to juggle your wands. It's a better alternative than nothing, though, and with luck can make you decently powerful pretty early.
An example of a basic early-game Zeta wand setup. (You need to drop any other wands you may be carrying except the one you want to be copied from.)
Here is the other wand you might carry. In this case, Zeta would have a 50/50 chance of either casting Black Hole or Circle of Vigor.
