Wand Refresh

Wand Refresh is a utility spell that has the powerful effect of causing a wand to reset itself without recharging and the associated delay. It also boasts the largest recharge delay reduction of any spell. Combined with a multicast spell, Wand Refresh can also be used to make any spell unlimited - even those unaffected by the Unlimited Spells perk.

Since spells after Wand Refresh are ignored you can use Wand Refresh to partition non-shuffle wands into an active section and a storage section - highly useful with limited inventory space. Placing expensive or limited cast spells in the storage section and then copying them using one of the Greek Spells is a powerful wand crafting technique.

Unlocking

The Wand Refresh spell can be obtained as one of the possible drops from killing Mestarien mestari in the Wizards' Den. Defeating Mestarien mestari will unlock the spell, even if it isn't dropped.

The spell will be unlocked as a possible spawn for all future runs. Since it is a Utility type spell it can't spawn on wands, so search for it in spell shops, or drops from Treasure Chests.

Tips

  • In addition to its' other benefits Wand Refresh boasts a massive -0.42 recharge time reduction, which you can typically apply twice per cast.
  • Wand Refresh can be used to bypass limited charges on spells, letting you cast them indefinitely. (Example below)
  • The reset effect only works once per recharge cycle. A second cast of Wand Refresh will immediately force the wand to recharge.
  • The wand's built-in multicast (spells per cast) can cause wrapping via Wand Refresh.
  • Using Wand Refresh to store instant kill spells such as Touch of Blood is very dangerous. If the wand runs out of mana at the right point it may skip Wand Refresh, and then regen enough mana to cast subsequent stored spells. This is unlikely - but placing an Add Mana immediately before Wand Refresh mitigates the possibility.

Unlimiting spells

You can combine a multicast spell, some number of limited-charge spells, and a Wand Refresh. This bypasses the mechanism that reduces charges, with obvious utility. Note that the spells do need to have at least one charge for this to work, and if Wand Refresh fails to cast (e.g. due to running out of mana) the charges will be consumed. Add Mana ensures that won't happen:

Storage

Particularly useful with large capacity wands, Wand Refresh can give you additional storage space. None of the spells after Wand Refresh will be cast, so long as Wand Refresh itself is. Worth keeping in mind that Wand Refresh does cost 20 mana and can be skipped if your wand runs out. An Add Mana or Blood Magic placed immediately before Wand Refresh avoids this possibility.

This example travel wand shows how you can still copy spells in the storage area. In this case Gamma is used to copy Circle of Vigour (which also bypasses its' limited charges). Other Greek Spells can be used for this too. The Giga Nukes should never be cast, with Add Mana ensuring there'll always be mana to cast Wand Refresh:

Wrapping

When Wand Refresh is cast the wand gets reset to the original ordering of spells. With enough multicast you can continue casting through the wand a second time. This is similar to wand wrapping without Wand Refresh, but with two key differences - built in wand multicast can cause it, and the entire wand can be re-cast.

This wand will not wrap:

Spells per cast

This wand also wraps with Wand Refresh - note the spells per cast:

The wand's built-in multicast causes Wand Refresh to wrap. This can be a nuisance on wands with a large number of spells per cast as they will unavoidably wrap. You can use Divide By to force a recharge, but you lose the recharge delay reduction:

An alternative to this is to use Requirements to wrap the wand contents, causing it to be cast once:

Requirement - Every Other
Spitter Bolt
Gamma
Requirement - Endpoint

Selective wrapping

You can wrap some or all of the wand in Requirement - Every Other to cast only part of the wand's contents twice. This is particularly useful to get twice the use from Add Mana:
