Matter Eater
Matter Eater is a projectile modifier type spell that gives affected projectiles a short-range material destroying effect similar to that of Mato or Hämähäkki. This effect will dig through most solid and powder materials - with the notable exception of Cursed Rock. It can also destroy many objects in the world, as well as gold nuggets, but has no effect on liquids.
This modifier is charge-limited, and is not affected by the Unlimited Spells perk, but the charge limit can be bypassed (see Unlimiting, below).
Tips
- Works very well with spells that follow you, such as Summon Friendly Fly.
- Works well with slower projectiles (e.g. Energy Orb or Slimeball) - if a projectile flies too fast it may hit terrain before the matter eating effect has a chance to remove it.
- Adds a lifetime component to affected projectiles with a random value in the range 200 ± 50. This limits the maximum lifespan of the projectile to 150-250 frames, regardless of any increase lifetime modifiers, or the natural lifespan of the projectile.
- Synergises strongly with Liquid Vacuum Field and Powder Vacuum Field, where the lifetime component effect of Matter Eater causes both to permanently delete materials.
- A wand with Always Cast Matter Eater is an incredibly powerful digging tool - any spells such a wand casts (directly) will always cut through steel, brickwork, and even extremely dense rock.
- Beware of angering the gods when using this, as the brickwork in the Holy Mountain, while resilient, is not immune to this spell.
- Can be used to cause some explosives, e.g. Summon Explosive Box and Bomb, to immediately explode.
- Works poorly with spells which create physical bodies, e.g. Summon Rock - the projectile will immediately destroy itself.
Unlimiting
The standard mechanisms for unlimited use of charge-limited spells will work:
- Can be copied with the Greek Spells: Mu, Tau, Gamma, Alpha and Zeta.
- Does not consume charges when multicast with Wand Refresh.
Matter Eater (like other projectile modifiers, and Myriad Spell) will only consume a charge if a spell of type Projectile, Static Projectile, or Material is cast normally alongside it. Through creative means this can be exploited to use the modifier effect without consuming charges.
Unlimited uses of Matter Eater by pairing with projectiles from non-Projectile-type spells. Requires at least one use left on Matter Eater.
Matter-eating Note:
Matter-eating Long-Distance Cast:
Unlimited uses of Matter Eater by pairing with Projectile-type spells "cast" in a nonstandard way. Requires at least one use left on Matter Eater.
Three matter-eating Slimeballs.

See Expert Guide: Discards from the Hand for more specifics on this mechanic. Another way of unlimiting uses specifics of the Add Trigger spell:
Unlimited uses of Matter Eater on trigger target. Add Trigger checks for nonzero uses left on Matter Eater but does not reduce its uses left, and directly discards it from the Deck.
