Magic Guard

Magic Guard is a spell that summons glowing lights that rotate around you, similar to Spiral Shot. These will damage enemies and knock away projectiles, both outgoing and incoming, for the duration of the spell. There are two variants, normal and big.

The lights of Big Magic Guard orbit much further away from you, rotate faster, and deal more damage compared to the normal one. For both variants, each light can hit at most once per 20 frames.

Tips

  • Spamming a few instances of this spell makes for surprisingly effective defense against most enemies. Even bosses.
  • As the rotating lights will disrupt outgoing projectiles as well, faster moving shots have a better chance to miss them and stay on track. The same goes for enemy projectiles too
    • Casting spells that can hurt you, like Disc Projectile or a projectile boosted by Bloodlust, can be particularly dangerous, as the guard can redirect them into you.
    • Luminous Drill with Timer and Long Distance Cast can be used to cast spells just outside the normal and big magic guard respectively, if you don't want your spells to be blocked. Wands with a longer sprite can already cast spells outside the normal magic guard.
  • The range of these spells, primarily the Big variant, can be used to kill enemies on the other side of terrain.
  • Kills with this attack count as trick kills, giving it synergy with the Trick Greed and Trick Blood Money perks.
  • The Projectile Eater perk will eat the magic guard particles, severely weakening Magic Guard's effect.

Trivia

  • The lights will disrupt and slosh around liquids too, but won't delete them.
  • You can cast this on enemies and on Pollen projectiles as well, if they are close enough and you cast this spell close enough to them. Multicasting Pollen followed by Magic Guard in that order will reliably trigger this effect. These lights will still not be hostile to you, though.
  • Magic Guard can attach to certain items, such as an Ukkoskivi, even if they are currently held in your inventory; these items can be thrown and the projectiles will continue to circle around them.
  • Despite being listed as a projectile, neither of the magic guard spells can be used to fuel Spells To Power.
