Multiple Projectile Spells
Spells that create more than one projectile when cast.
Lightning Spells
Spells which have one or more lightning effects. These are distinct from spells doing Electricity damage, having a Lightning Component.
Ball Lightning is a projectile type spell that creates a short-ranged spread of three naturally piercing spheres of electricity. Each sphere slows rapidly, and travels only a short distance. They are instantly stopped when hitting terrain (though this doesn't make them explode sooner). The combination of piercing and Electricity damage make this an ideal spell for killing many bosses.
Tips
- The short range limits the usefulness of the spell, but this can be alleviated with the use of a Trigger spell or Long-Distance Cast to launch the bolts at a distance.
- Similar to Lightning Bolt, it's easy to harm yourself when using this spell; be careful when casting it near liquids or metals without the Electricity Immunity or Electricity perk, especially when using it without triggers or other methods of increasing its range.
- While the projectiles themselves do not naturally have Friendly Fire, the explosion is still able to damage you naturally and might stun you temporarily upon doing so. This damage can be heavily reduced with Electricity Immunity, Electricity or Gas Blood (which will also remove the electric stun effect) or mitigated completely with Explosion Immunity or Exploding Corpses.
- The triple-projectile nature of the spell means that it synergizes well with all modifiers, as each is applied to the bolts separately.
- Speed modifiers like Speed Up will not increase the range, but rather shorten the time it takes to reach its maximum range.
- Unlike most other spells, the spread from Ball Lightning doesn't apply to other projectiles within the same cast. However, Reduce Spread will still work on Ball Lightning.
- Ball Lightning has an innate piercing effect, so a homing modifier significantly increases the damage dealt by the projectiles.
- Remove Explosion modifier can't remove its explosion.
Multiple Projectiles
Some spells, including Ball Lightning, produce several projectiles per cast. This property produces useful effects and synergies, and has some caveats to be aware of when used with other spells.
- Modifiers that add damage will apply to all of the individual projectiles, multiplying their value.
- The Arc modifier spells, particularly Electric Arc, work well since they are more effective when many projectiles are cast together.
- Pattern angles set by Formation multicast and other spells can apply to each projectile individually.
- Add Trigger will attempt to add a trigger to each individual projectile, using a separate payload for each one.
- Some spells produce a different number of projectiles when combined with Add Trigger.
