Durability determines resistance to damage. Projectiles like Luminous Drill, and all explosions such as those from Bomb, have a maximum durability that they can be used to destroy. If a material's durability exceeds this value, the projectile or explosion will not damage or destroy it.
The following table lists the maximum durability threshold of some spells, as well as some examples of materials with those durabilities.
Hardness also determines resistance to damage, secondarily to Durability.
Each pixel of material has an 'HP' value in the materials file. An explosion traces multiple rays around the point of explosion. These rays have a maximum "ray energy" that is used to consume the HP of each pixel of the material the ray is travelling through, up to the maximum radius of the explosion. When the "ray energy" is used up, the material is no longer destroyed.
This is why, for example, Unstable Crystal is worse at digging than TNT; TNT, in addition to being able to damage materials up to 11 durability (vs. 10 for Unstable Crystal), has more than 30 times the "ray energy" of Unstable Crystal, meaning that for materials with a lot of hardness like rock, explosions from Unstable Crystal will only destroy 2-3 pixels of material, whereas TNT is likely to remove material up to its full radius of 28 pixels.

This wand build uses Ground to Sand and Long-Distance Cast to make the distant terrain into the sand, remove the sand with Explosion, and then teleport into there immediately with Nolla+Return. You should be careful to Polymorphine when you travel fast with this wand since it can not remove them and the sight can be easily disturbed by the explosion effect of Explosion.
Black Hole and White Hole lack precision - they have a slightly variable lifetime which leads to a slightly variable length of tunnel. There are two ways to mitigate this - make their speed zero, and/or their lifetime as short as possible. By using Nolla you can reduce their lifetime to exactly 2 frames, which at their default speed produces a nice neat circular hole. Rapid-firing this as the payload to Long-Distance Cast gives you a very precise, circular terrain erasing, 'Black Hole on a Stick'.
Inner Spell, while optional, improves precision by removing sources of jitter like the breathing animation.

At Longer Range
As the name implies, Long-Distance Cast has a rather short reach. If you want to dig precisely at longer distances one option is using Add TriggerLightning Bolt. Unlike most projectiles, Lightning can go faster than 1000px/s, making it an excellent tool for instantaneous remote casting, and varying the speed varies the distance it travels in its 1 frame lifetime.
(Alpha copies the Tau discarded by Add Trigger, saving some mana).
As you (and the gods) may have noticed, sufficiently large Mato and Lukki can dig through hard materials like Holy Mountain brickwork and Extremely Dense Rock. You can harness this ability to your own ends by herding or baiting these creatures into tunnelling in the direction you desire.
Worms will enthusiastically pursue you (and pose little threat if you have Melee Immunity or unlimited healing). Lukki can be forced to tunnel in a particular direction by using Circle of Buoyancy to push them around.

Powder Vacuum Field can be used to extract gold and other loose materials from the ground, without disturbing the surrounding rock. The field gathers material from a wide area, but releases it all from the center. By making an overlapping chain of the fields you can cause the material to 'bubble' upward from field to field, eventually emerging at the surface in a shower of gold.
