Vaihdosmestari

Vaihdosmestari (listen Audio.svg) (also known as Master of Exchange or Swapper) is one of the many master spellcasters. It takes the appearance of a humanoid with blue skin, a single white, cross-shaped eye, and a tiny, gray stem on its head, and is dressed in a kobicha brown robe and cape with a white trim. Its body is made of ambiguous meat.

Behaviour

The Master of Exchange specializes in homing blue magic orbs that do not deal damage, but cause the target and itself to immediately switch positions, identical to the Swapper spell. More importantly, this effect also triggers when it is damaged by another entity. This can cause you to be hurt by your own projectiles that can deal self-damage, such as Summon Disc Projectile or any spell with the Piercing Shot spell modifier.

Combat Tips

  • As with all Masters, exercise caution and focus on avoiding the projectiles. This is easily done by constantly moving perpendicular to the enemy's aiming trajectory (which usually means levitating up or falling down) and staying at a medium distance.
  • The on-damage swap occurs once per damage type on a projectile. Hitting them with a projectile that deals an even number of damage types avoids leaving you at the mage's location[1] unless the killing blow was dealt by an odd-numbered damage type.
    • One way to craft around this is to use a projectile that deals x damage of one type and x damage of another type, where an even multiple of x is required to completely deplete the mage's health pool. This is not completely reliable when other enemies are damaging and/or healing the mage.
    • Another way is to use a projectile with x damage of one type and y damage of another, where x and y are both individually less than the mage's max health, but x+y is greater. This is also unreliable when other enemies have hit the mage.
  • Accidental kills are another option, as they won't trigger the swapping effect.
  • If you do not have such a setup, be sure to fight this enemy in isolation. Its slow speed and unaggressive behavior should make it easy to pick where you fight.
  • Be careful when using spells that linger or home in on enemies, such as the common late-game Homing + Drilling Shot + projectile combination, as this may cause you to swap unexpectedly some distance away; possibly into the middle of a crowd of enemies.
  • Avoid using Plasma Beam spells against this enemy, as hitting them with one will swap you directly into the plasma beam.
  • If you have the Contact Damage perk, jumping right on top of them (with care taken to avoid their projectiles as one gets close) immediately draws the player an their position to the same place, and completely shuts down their movement and actions generally resulting in a quick kill. Some movement is still possible as a player in this state, only they are truly frozen.

The Vaihdosmestari does no damage, but swaps places with its target.
It also swaps with any creature that hits it.
If hit with a par number of Damage Types (i.e. Energy Sphere's Slice and Projectile), the swap will immediately be reversed.
