Jättimato

Jättimato (listen Audio.svg) (or Giant Worm) is a larger, stronger, and faster variant of Mato. They are a rare natural spawn in most of the biomes on the main path, and can be summoned through the use of Matosade.

They destroy all solids while traveling, leaving tunnels that you can move through. There is a risk that they will damage the Holy Mountain enough to anger the gods. The Worm Crystal reduces the chance of this happening by deterring the worm, but this may still happen on occasion.

Giant Worms have a chance to spawn from the wiggling egg found in the Giant Tree nest.

When killed, they have a 50% chance of dropping extra max health pickup. They also bleed Worm Blood, a valuable consumable for increasing your viewing radius.

Combat Tips

  • Freezing spells or spell modifiers allow you to kick and kill it instantly. It thaws relatively quickly, so act fast.
    • If you kill it in this way, it will not bleed, and thus you will get no worm blood.
  • As the enemy has multiple segments you can shred through it quickly using piercing shot.
  • Melee Immunity will render this enemy harmless, other than the damage to terrain it will cause.
  • You can kill it very easily by staying far away and using a long distance spell, even something as weak as spark bolt.
  • The worm can't move where there's no terrain to move through, so going to areas with sparse terrain can help avoid it.
    • However, it can build up a lot of speed and fly a surprising distance up into the air when lunging for you, so stay on your toes.
    • As it is much faster than you, trying to outrun a worm when it is close enough to attack is not recommended. Instead, take advantage of its slow turning speed by dodging sideways (relative to the worms current path). Following the tunnels a worm left behind is also a bad idea for this reason, as it limits the directions in which you can move; by the time you see a worm coming towards you when you're walking in a tunnel, it can often already be too late to dodge.
  • Its head is the only part of it that can deal damage, allowing you to use spells like chainsaw for a high risk/reward payoff.
  • Try to fight near a fire or create one if possible, the larger the better. Worms are not immune to burn damage and will catch fire if it moves through burning material. If the fire is large enough it may reignite several times.
    • Its material-destroying effect will also prevent liquids like water from staining the worm and extinguishing the burning effect, making fire an even more beneficial method to deal with these worms; they will keep burning even when they are fully submerged in water.

Notes

  • Giant Worms spawned with Matosade do not drop max health upgrades.
  • Giant Worms are unique in that they are not considered a miniboss by the game, but still have a visible health bar like one.
