Kivi

Kivi (listen Audio.svg) (lit. Stone, also known as Sky Boss) is a mini-boss creature which copies your health pool and returns damage taken.

It can be found in the Kivi Temple, over the Desert and to the immediate east of the Ominous Temple. It resembles a simple stone rolling along the floor of the arena.

Behaviour

Kivi is completely passive and cannot attack or otherwise affect you by default. It slowly rolls around menacingly towards you.

Kivi also bears an aura which instantly removes Ambrosia stains and inflicts Wet Wet on nearby entities, invalidating Stainless Armour. The latter can be avoided if water no longer exists in the world. For example, beating Leviathan can transmute all water into smoke. If water has been shifted to a liquid, you will be stained with that corresponding stain instead of Wet Wet. Kivi's aura only removes your other stains when you can see its health bar. If you can damage Kivi while not seeing its health bar, you can do so safely with Ambrosia.

When damaged, Kivi spawns an invisible entity (that emits red sparks) to deal holy damage to you, in an amount at least equal to the amount received, more if you have more HP than the boss. The damage cannot be blocked or resisted, but Saving Grace and Extra Life may still offset it, although the damage lingers for a short time. The damage entity lives for 90 frames by default. If you polymorph, this damage entity will gain extra lifetime so it can hurt you once the transformation ends--this also applies if you damage it while polymorphed as a different enemy.

If it is damaged and your HP percentage is higher than the Kivi's HP percentage, the Kivi will reflect enough damage to bring your HP to an equal percentage. Since the damage entity tries to bring you to this percentage in one go but makes attempts every frame it lives, a minimum of 90 tries, stainless armor is rendered less effective even if you avoid the wet stain from the boss. This makes it difficult to kill without dying yourself.

Upon death, an animation plays and three Kummitus spawn (if you have at least one "bones wand"). They can each carry a copy of the same wand. These ghosts also copy your max HP.

Strategy

The easiest way to defeat this boss is via Cessation. The Cessation spell with increase lifetime modifier makes instantly annihilating Kivi easy, as retaliation damage misses if you no longer exist.

The majority of healing methods will not work, as the boss will just equalize your health should you damage it. If water has been forcibly removed from the world, Stainless Armour can also be sufficient to ignore the damage, but requires a lot of stacks. At 7 Stainless Armours the 90 reflected damage instances, which are holy damage that the player has 1.5 multiplier against, will be reduced to be about equal to the damage dealt. So you need more than 7 stainless to take less damage than you dealt (eg. 20 stainless and 50k damage per second will give you single <20 damage per second).

Beware the three Kummitus ghosts, which can be supremely dangerous if you have very powerful wands in your bones folder. However, if they do spawn with powerful wands, and you manage to defeat them, you could receive an immense boost in power for your run.

It has no vulnerabilities or immunities and few resistances, so almost any attack will be able to kill it.

Saving Grace and a sufficient healing source can be used to avoid death, although a quick method of escape is recommended to avoid the potentially dangerous Kummitus ghosts spawned.

An incredibly easy strategy to safely defeat Kivi is Explosive Detonator + Dormant Crystal (or similar explosive) + Ambrosia. If you damage Kivi from the top of the entrance to Kivi Temple, you can do so while stained with Ambrosia. Cover the floor and platforms of Kivi's lair with explosives. Go to the top of Kivi Temple and get an Ambrosia stain. You won't see Kivi's health bar, but you can still deal damage to it. Once stained with Ambrosia, cast Explosive Detonator. With Dormant Crystal, the explosion also took care of the three Kummitus.

Alternatively, spell setups with sufficiently long range/lifetime can be used to attack Kivi successfully while stained with Ambrosia from near the top of Kivi Temple. You can try shooting from the entrance mouth or stand on a ledge near the top. Short-range Homing + Increase Lifetime + Luminous Drill can work for attack. It helps to first lead Kivi into the middle of its chamber. From your chosen vantage and while stained with Ambrosia, aim down the entrance and homing will guide your projectiles to Kivi (and the three Kummitus). See the gallery for an example.

Notes

  • The kill for this boss will count even if you didn't directly kill it, or if it died after you did. Note that this will also end pacifism.
  • There are three engravings of Kummitus in the background, corresponding to where they will spawn.
  • If removed from its spawn area, Kivi will be teleported towards it, but not necessarily onto the temple, and can get stuck in a constant loop of falling.
