The Matkija (listen Audio.svg) (also known as Mimic) is a rare enemy that looks exactly like a normal chest. It cannot move and it will not attack you until you are touching it.

The Jalkamatkatavara (listen Audio.svg) (also known as Leggy Mimic) is a rare variant which will grow limbs when awakened and use them to attack you. It will drop the Leggy Mutation perk when killed. It has a 5% chance to replace a regular mimic.

Strategies

There are several ways to distinguish between a chest and a mimic:

  • If there is no 'Treasure chest' tooltip displayed when hovering over a chest with the mouse, then it is a mimic.
  • If you attack it and it displays a damage value, it is a mimic.
    • It's generally safer to just shoot chests open since there's no known penalty compared to opening one by interacting with it. One possible risk, however, is that Treasure Chests may drop flasks, which may accidentally become shattered or broken in the process, especially with wands that shoot projectiles rapidly.
  • If it is floating in water, it is a mimic.
  • If it is is rotated in any way such that it looks visually different from the page image on the right (exclude biting frames), it is not a mimic.
    • Chests are physiscs objects and may rotate, and mimics are not.
  • If a stain indicator appears on top of the chest, then it is a mimic.

Note: None of the above strategies will help you identify a Leggy Mimic. Their disguises are significantly more sophisticated, and they will not awaken until you approach them and press the interact key to "open" the chest. Once you do, they will sprout legs and try to attack.

Also, mimics do not appear from ground level to the 3 chunks (first holy mountain) underground: all chests in the Mines and Collapsed Mines are thus safe.

"Not A Mimic" signs

NOT

A

MIMIC

Mimics of both types have a 1/30 chance to spawn with a sign. The glyphs on the sign read: "NOT A MIMIC". Ordinary chests also have a 1/300 chance to spawn with a sign. Combined with the 10% chance for chests to be mimics, this means that these signs are only correct about half of the time.

Tips

  • A mimic stained with Pheromone will drop gold nuggets of varying size and rarely Potions and Extra Max Health. It should be cautioned however that with each output of a mimic, it will have a small chance to take a sudden lethal amount of damage.
    • By putting a friendly mimic in a pool of Ambrosia, you can take advantage of this mechanic to get infinite gold and potions (albeit very slowly).
    • Mimic potion drops are determined by pixel, much like that of the wands produced by the Summon Taikasauva spell.
    • A great way for alchemist players to take advantage of the pixel-to-potion mechanic to obtain consistent potion outputs is to douse the mimic in Ambrosia and Pheromone stains, then using any form of mob movement(Swapper, Circle of Buoyancy, etc.), move the mimic into a room filled with any variant of fungus. Due to its passable nature for only creatures, items and gold will be teleported to the top above the fungus. By making this room underneath some EDR, and having a flat space dug out, with varied success of potion breakages, the mimic will pump out the same potion every time as long as it stays still.
    • Drops in the below table are randomized, that is to say, the pixel-to-potion mechanic is only relevant in the Regular Potions drop. It is not possible to guarantee specific gold nuggets or Extra Max Health.
    • Several mimics spawn in fungal biome at right under desert on seed: 1328704931
Drop Chance
10 gold 79.9%
50 gold 12.5%
200 gold 6%
Regular Potions 1.5%
Extra Max Health 0.1%
