Mysteries and Oddities

From Noita Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Noita has many unsolved mysteries and miscellaneous oddities that have no known association. Among the most popular unsolved mysteries are the Eye Messages and Cauldron Room. More of the unsolved mysteries and miscellaneous oddities scattered throughout the game world or in associated media are catalogued below. There is no known further meaning or purpose to any of these mysteries and oddities than any that are listed.

Runic Mysteries

Tutorial Stones

The runes engraved on these stones read RUBEDO and ETERNAL.LIFE respectively.

The two tutorial stones outside of the cave at the start of the game contain some translatable runes. The first stone says RUBEDO which in the Hermetic alchemy tradition represents redness or the fourth and final stage in the Magnum Opus. The first stone also features a set of three eyes which can also be found elsewhere in the game, such as on the robes of the Mestarien mestari. The second stone says ETERNAL.LIFE which refers to one of the potential achievements of the Magnum Opus.

Trailer Altar

The Altar shown in the trailer and promotional material.

In the trailers and promotional material one of the common pixel scenes features an altar which doesn't spawn in the game world under normal circumstances. When the altar interacts with an object that has the sacred_barrel property the Earthquake visual and magical effect will occur. This effect can also occur in-game if you find the altar in Nightmare mode New Game Plus loops, but you will need to edit the sacred_barrel property onto an item since no known in-game item has this property naturally. The runes on the altar feature six runes which cannot be found anywhere else in the game. Through deduction these runes have been translated and spell out the word: MAGICK. Combined with the rest of the runes this implies the alphabet: BDMAGICKEFHJLNOPQRSTUVWXYZ. For further reading about the translation and how to find the altar in-game refer to the Trailer Altar Mystery Document.

Earthquake Circle

The particle effect that appears when casting the Earthquake spell.

The Earthquake Circle is a visual effect that appears when using the Earthquake spell and when activating a variety of other things. The circle is notable for featuring several rows of both runes and what appear to be zeroes and ones. Starting from the small gap found on the outermost circle of runes the rows are as follows:

Size Contents
32 KMGICKMGICKMGICKMGICKMGICKMGICKM
24 000000000000000000000000
20 10101010101010101010
17 11110111011101110
24 AGICKMAGICKMAGICKMAGICKM

Another observation made was that there are the same number of 0 and 1 symbols in the earthquake circle as there are holy mountain portals in a New Game world. There has been some unsuccessful tests to see if manipulating holy mountain portals according to patterns derived from the Earthquake Circle will lead to any secrets, but more testing is required.

Biome Oddities

Mysterious Art Near Alchemist

The mysterious background art above the Ancient Laboratory Orb Room.
The symbol itself against a white background for easier viewing.

Above the Orb Room at the end of the Ancient Laboratory buried in the snow you can find this mysterious symbol. Both of Noita's artists, Arvi and Antti, have been asked specifically about this symbol and both have confirmed that neither of them put it there. Additionally, Olli has denied putting it there. It is likely that this symbol means something to Petri.

Desert Glyphs

An example of ruins that can spawn in the Desert.

Scattered throughout the desert are ruins that are procedurally generated from a specific set of pieces. Three of these pieces feature three symbols: A set of 3 small ovals, what appears to be the string ¡!¡, and a rhombus resembling a diamond. Some people believe these to be hints related to the Eye Messages or perhaps just symbols that relate to the Game Lore.

Lake Effigy

The lake effigy.

Above the Lake in the center of the island is a wicker man wooden effigy. During Juhannus, which takes place on the Saturday between June 13 and June 19, a lantern spawns under each arm and the island will also be populated by many drunk Hiisi.

Infinite Power Plant

Far below the Lake and below the lava river is a small patch of a Power Plant biome that was accidentally placed by Arvi at some point and the developers thought it was funny so they left it in. (citation needed) The biome appears like a normal power plant at the top, but contains nothing but the background infinitely below it until the next The Work (Hell) loop is reached.

Water Biome

In the New Game map to the right at the bottom of The Tower is a patch of Water (Biome) which is just an empty area filled with water similar to The Gold biome. It is exactly one biome tile in area, just like The Gold.

Tree Doodles

The E.S.A. initials found in the Tree.
The drawing found beneath the Tree.

In the tree there can be found the initials E.S.A. referring to Hempuli's game Environmental Station Alpha. Below in the dark cave a stylized robot-dog doodle can be found that is similar to the art style featured in Petri's previous game Crayon Physics, but it is uncertain if he put it here.

Datamined Mysteries

QR Code

The datamined QR code with some noise.

Kaliuresis discovered a QR code overlapped with some noise in the exe while looking through the 34-orb ending code. The QR code when scanned leads to this webpage. This url redirects to the Rickroll on Youtube. When you complete a run with 34 orbs the QR code loads into memory during the credits. The QR code will persist in memory until the game is restarted. Also, for some reason a single pixel gets changed when it's loaded into memory.

"Kiitoksia kaloista!"

This message is also found in the code for the secret 34-orb credits. Translated to English is the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy reference, "So long and thanks for all the fish!" It is unknown how to trigger this secret message.

Miscellaneous Oddities and Further Reading

There are many runes and other oddities in the art for the game that are too ambiguous to dedicate a section for. Refer to the following documents for further reading:

  • GrahamBurger's Grand Glyph Document covers the majority of these ambiguous runic oddities and also features some runes you might find with mods.
  • Nemare's Noita Relations Miro board is a great resource for the majority of the graphical assets in the game and some related theories to their meanings.
