Cauldron mechanics

A broken cauldron, from void liquid

The Cauldron works in strange ways. It can spawn either empty, or with Void Liquid inside which immediately destroys it. Data mining showed that there is a schedule that covers the entire 2021, you can check it here: https://pastebin.com/jgmrAcuT

The Cauldron Room spawns in new game+ (in similar locations), however it won’t spawn when mods are enabled (neither in NG+ or NG). If you render it first, and then enable the mods, the giant tablet and with it the rest of the background will disappear, marking it inactive in this world. It is however possible to bypass this limitation, by manually editing world_state.xml file.

[The cauldron room spawns WITHOUT turning into gold after completing the work, you have to dodge the curse that turns you into gold and then dig to it - I hope this helps!]

Cauldron room in relation to other hidden rooms

The Cauldron room shares similarities with other hidden EDR rooms (i.e meditation room, ancient eye room, containers in the lake, etc). First, and most obvious one is that it is hidden behind EDR. This could suggest that somewhere exists a portal that leads to the room. However, in contrast to other hidden rooms, there is no portal leading back to biome, and the only place where players could possibly teleport is the inside of the cauldron. It is possible that the real content of the room shows only after getting in there the intended way.

Cauldron room/Altar of Permanence

When Altar of Nullification was introduced into the game, data miners found in the translation files mentions of something called “Altar of Permanence”. It is speculated that the cauldron is in reality the Altar of Permanence, and its purpose is to carry stuff through runs/NG+

Cauldron room and the meat update

Some say that the cauldron room is not ready yet, and its final version will be introduced in a rumored “meat update”. We’ve asked one of the devs about if the cauldron is finished, and he hasn’t confirmed nor denied it.

Initial release and Acceleratium

In the very first patch that the cauldron room was discovered, it spawned with Acceleratium every time. This behaviour was changed at some point, but may provide a clue.

What had been tried already?

This section is WIP

There are plenty of things that has been tried. In this page, we split experiments into two groups:

  • with the lid removed with any digging spell
  • without removing the lid

Given the fact that void liquid destroys the cauldron, it is possible that any interference in cauldron state may deactivate it.

With a removed lid

  • Making Kummitus jump into the cauldron
  • Putting an Orb of True Knowledge into the cauldron, and advancing into New Game Plus
  • Putting various items inside the cauldron - gourds, sunseeds, orbs, tablets,
  • Putting movable structures (chests, music machines)
  • Putting meat of bosses inside the cauldron
  • Putting Karl inside the cauldron

Without removing the lid

Note: not everything can be put inside the cauldron, so most of the stuff from this section WAS PUT INTO THE ROOM, NOT TO THE CAULDRON ITSELF:

  • Bringing enemies into the room - Kummitus, Hiisi Chef, Horror Monster
  • Turning player into Hiisi Chef
  • Bringing an Orb of True Knowledge
  • Alchemy - That has been done inside the cauldron. Almost all of the known liquids were poured into it, including mixing them.
  • Putting a wand and Pheromone into the cauldron - a normal charmed wand was created.
  • Turning the room's sand into Fungus
  • Fungal shifting the room's sand into Void Liquid
