Setting Recommendations/Linux cloud settings

If you are willing to forgo steam achievements you may use the 'add a game' steam option to launch noita much more quickly than by default. You will have to copy your save_shared and save00 files from the games old compatdata directory to it's newer one which will be findable if you save once after having gained initial character control by searching Nolla_Games_Noita from within the compatdata directory. The old saves will always be inside the 881100 compatdata directory as that is the games rungameid.

On Linux disabling steam cloud may not prevent steam from attempting to synchronize with the cloud, even when steam is in offline mode, leading to annoying wait times. Creating a .desktop shortcut leading to the app and it's files and launching with Wine will lead to any Sync induced loading and closing wait times to be removed. Note that you will have to copy over your save_shared and save00 files over to your .wine directory and that steam achievement's will be disabled until you copy them back and launch from steam again.

Locations:

  • /SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/881100/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Nolla_Games_Noita/
  • /.wine/drive_c/users/username/AppData/LocalLow/Nolla_Games_Noita/
  • /SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Noita/

Steps:

  1. Create shortcut Noita.desktop
  2. Using Vim (or any file editor) type:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Categories=wine
    Exec=/bin/wine /path_to/noita.exe
    Icon=/path_to/data/icon.bmp
    Name=Noita
    Path=/path_to/
    Type=Application

  3. Open properties and tick 'is executable' and apply
  4. copy over save data
  5. Open and save once (you will receive an older version may not be compatible notice, this will only happen once)
  6. Done

Mods should work unless they require steam to function.

Or you could, ya' know, just like 'add a game' to steam and directly link that to Noita's exe and then only have to find and override the new save file. which will be created inside your home directories steam library under the newest created folder in compatdata with the same path after that as from '881100' without having to create an application shortcut, as steam doesn't create cloud data for non steam games.

Still no achievements. also still has like a 15 second closing delay for some reason, also deleted or dropped through the world some spells which were inside the same loading chunk as me when I copied the save over, that was weird, but didn't happen after that.

Pros & Cons

  • Default Steam: up to more than a minute loading and closing the game, achievements, cloud-save, steam overlay, steam controller config
  • Wine: negligible loading and closing, no achievements, no cloud-save, no overlay, default controller config, might not be compatible with all controllers, but you can change all controllers in steam to output game readable outputs to outside steam.
  • game exe via Steam: negligible loading, up to 20 seconds closing, no achievement, no cloud save, yes overlay, yes steam controller config.

Steam has some weird saving mechanics lol, all 3 were using the same save files.
