Terminal Velocity

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Almost all projectiles are limited in the top speed they can attain by their Terminal Velocity. This is usually 1000px/s, though there are exceptions. Throwable items are also subject to Terminal Velocity.

Slower

Some spells create projectiles with a Terminal Velocity lower than 1000px/s.

Faster

The projectile created by Lightning Bolt is not limited by Terminal Velocity and can move significantly more quickly, up to 61,440 px/s. The only way to reach this speed is to use Fly Upwards or Fly Downwards

Modifiers

Many projectiles have an initial speed higher than 1000px/s, but they will never move faster than their Terminal Velocity. The excess initial speed may be consumed by speed reducing modifications without penalty.

Modifiers can also only increase projectile speed up to this limit. For almost all projectiles, reaching 1000px/s requires no more than 4 Speed Up modifiers, and many require fewer.

Modifiers that add acceleration will make projectiles reach their top speed more quickly, which is especially important when using wand builds reliant on Speed Scaling bonus damage.

Exceeeding

Since teleporting relies on projectiles, Terminal Velocity imposes a soft cap on the maximum speed at which you can teleport - no faster than the projectile can move. However, projectiles can have their position changed in other ways.

Warping

Some scripted effects move projectiles instantly:

  • Phasing Arc - Every 12 frames, projectiles are moved 28px along their trajectory for every copy of the modifier. E.g. 56px with 2 copies, 84px with 3 copies, etc.
  • Vacuum Field - After 8 frames, moves projectiles and 'hittable' entities within a radius of 64px to its center.
  • Warp Cast - After 2 frames, moves the projectile it creates up to 120px (subject to line-of-sight).
  • Teleporting Cast - After 1 frame, moves the projectile it creates to the location of a 'homing target' found within a radius of 96px.
  • Inner Spell - After 1 frame, moves affected projectiles an unlimited distance to the centre of the caster's hitbox.

Wand Length

Projectiles fired from the wand are spawned at the wand's tip - a location which can vary by up to 25px depending on the wand's length. There is no direct correlation between this location and how long the wand appears to be (or its capacity), but it is always the same for a given wand sprite.

Projectiles spawning at the tip are effectively moved up to 25px instantly. This can make a huge difference in applications where projectiles live for very short periods, e.g. tele wands.
