Gem can be any one of various coloured materials mostly used to define items.
Coloured Variants
Blue Gems are used to define the bodies of Thunderstones and the enemy Taivaskristalli.
Taivaskristalli's corpse will also be the same blue gem material.
The remaining coloured gems appear to be unused.

These variants of Gem are used to define the items used by the Sun Quest, and the rocks found on the restored Celestial Scale in the Desert.
