The Mountain Altar, viewed from a distance

The Mountain Altar (also known as the Sky Altar or the Floating Island) is a structure found floating directly above the snowy tip of the Mountain. It always contains an Orb of True Knowledge and Emerald Tablet - Volume I.

A variety of different items and objects can be brought to the pedestal on top of the altar to trigger various events.

Written upon the altar in Glowing Stone is the text:

BRING

THE

TREASURE

HERE

Events

Depending on which items are brought to the Mountain Altar, many different events can be triggered. Some events can be repeated infinitely, sometimes with risk involved, while some events can only be triggered once per run.

All events can still be triggered even if the altar is partially or fully destroyed. SPOILER: The Altar will appear and function as normal in all Parallel Worlds. However, note that events that can only be triggered once cannot be done at parallel altars.

Sampo

Main article: Endings

Bringing the Sampo to the Mountain Altar and offering it triggers one of several different Endings, depending on how many Orbs of True Knowledge you currently possess.

  • 11 orbs - always triggers the Pure Ending - The world will turn to Gold without killing you.
  • 33 orbs - always triggers the Peaceful Ending - An animation will play, showing the day/night cycle being reversed, and the view fades to black. The message
The world has been restoredand everyone is much happier
is displayed. After ending the game and starting a new game, this unlocks a permanent cosmetic amulet for the Noita.
  • If neither of the above preset endings are triggered, one of two things will happen:
    • If the New Game + orb requirements are satisfied, NG+ will begin: you keep all your wands, spells, and perks, and the world will be regenerated. See the NG+ page for details on the orb requirements.
    • Any other amount of orbs without satisfying the NG+ requirements - The world will turn to Toxic Gold. This will normally kill you, but having Toxic Immunity will allow you to survive.

Emerald Tablet

Dropping an Emerald Tablet onto the Mountain Altar will convert it into around 120 Gold nugget.png in gold dust, and display the message:

Your curiosity is rewarded

If 2 or more tablets have been converted already, there is a chance that the altar may spawn three Hell Gazers when the tablet is converted. This chance starts at a 1/7 chance, and increases every time another tablet is sacrificed, from 1/6, to 1/5, and so on, eventually stopping at 1/2. If a Hell Gazer is spawned by sacrificing a tablet, the following message will be displayed instead of the normal one:

Your curiosity is rewarded, but...

Sacrificing 3 or more tablets to the Altar in one run awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree.

Throwing an Emerald Tablet.
The Hell Gazer event being triggered.

Treasure Chest

Bringing a Treasure Chest to the altar, either through Telekinetic Kick, Circle of Buoyancy, a Kuu, or otherwise, will cause it to disappear and trigger the Chest Rain event, causing 15 to 45 treasure chests to fall from the sky above the altar and display the message:

Your curiosity is rewarded

Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree. This event can only be triggered once per run. Sacrificing a Great Treasure Chest yields the same effect.

Sacrificing a Chest triggers the Chest Rain.

Worm Crystal

Carrying one of the Worm Crystals found in Holy Mountains to the Mountain Altar will trigger the Worm Rain event, where over 5 seconds, 15-45 Pikkumato, Mato, and Jattimato will begin to fall from the sky and display the message:

That is not what you seek!

Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree. Unlike the worms spawned by Matosade, the Jattimato spawned by this event may drop Extra Max HP.

Sacrificing a Worm Crystal triggers the Worm Rain.

Sun Gems

Click to show content

The Light or Dark Sun Gems can be carried to the Mountain Altar to convert them into their respective Sun. Each Sun can only be made this way once per run. This event may be useful for creating multiple suns in close proximity to each other for the Supernova Achievement Pillar.

A commonly reported issue is one or both of the Sun Gems losing the entity when being unloaded, and being rendered unusable for sacrifice. It's recommended to keep one or both gems onscreen at all times if you plan to use them for sacrifice.

Sacrificing a Sun Gem spawns a fully-formed, extremely dangerous Sun.

Greed-cursed Crystal

Once the Curse of Greed has been taken, a Greed-Cursed Crystal will appear in all future Holy Mountains, even once the curse has been removed. Bringing one of these crystals to the Mountain Altar will trigger the Greed Rain event, causing 30-90 meteors to rain down from the sky that deal massive damage to anything caught within the blast radius and create gold nuggets upon impact. It will also display the message:

your curiosity is rewarded

Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree. The event can be repeated as many times as you wish, but the meteors will only yield gold nuggets upon doing the event for the first time.

Sacrificing a Greed-Cursed Crystal triggers a rain of unique Meteors.

Hand Statue

Taking one of the stone Monk Hand Statues found in the Snowy Depths to the Mountain Altar will consume the statue and spawn 12 Jättilaser-lennokki with Munkki hands in a large circle around the Mountain Altar with the message:

your curiosity is rewarded

Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree. This is often seen as one of the most difficult events to complete, as Telekinetic Kick cannot be used to carry a hand statue to the altar; it will simply activate it instead. A Kuu or Circle of Buoyancy is recommended to transport the hand.

Sacrificing a Hand Statue spawns a unique kind of Jättilaser-lennokki.

Utility Box

Bringing an Utility Box to the altar will cause it to disappear and trigger the Utility Box Rain event, causing 15 to 45 boxes to fall from the sky above the altar and display the message:

Your curiosity is rewarded

This event can only be triggered once per run. Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree.

Sacrificing an Utility Box triggers the Utility Box Rain.

Fish

If a live Eväkäs or Suureväkäs is brought to the Mountain Altar, the Fish Rain event is triggered, causing 60-120 fish corpses to fall from the sky with the message:

That is not what you seek!

Once the rain has ended, the Hauen Leukaluu is spawned upon the altar, an unique wand shaped after a fish's spine.

If you cannot find Circle of Buoyancy, you can use Circle of Unstable Metamorphosis to polymorph a fish into an enemy that can carry a wand, then toss them a wand that has a (preferably short) Teleport Bolt to lure them to the Altar. However, this is a dangerous and unreliable method since the fish can turn into dangerous enemies that will attack you and the other fish. Polymorphing yourself into a fish will not trigger the rain. Homebringer may also be used with some difficulty to trigger the event though as fish take fall damage you have to be careful not to kill them.

This event can only be triggered once per run.

Unloading the wand by moving away or restarting the game before picking it up will cause the wand to receive a different world sprite.

Sacrificing a live Fish or Orange Fish will trigger the Fish Rain.

Potion Mimic

Bringing a Henkevä potu to the Mountain Altar triggers the Potion Mimic event, causing 3 other Potion Mimics to fall from the sky with the message:

That is not what you seek!

Once the rain has ended, the Hauen Leukaluu is spawned upon the altar, an unique wand shaped after a fish's spine.

This event can only be triggered once per run. Triggering this event awards an Achievement Pillar on top of the Tree.

Sacrificing a Potion Mimic will spawn 3 more.
